It is cold here, but the sun is warm on my face. I found this spot behind the building where I work, an oasis of trees and moss within a desert of bland business buildings. The freeway, a random roar of traffic reminiscent of the ocean, is hidden from view by a massive tangle of barren blackberry bushes. A messy pile of great boulders and chunks of displaced concrete are softened by the vibrant green moss thriving in this climate of cool sunshine and frequent rain. I breathe the cold, sharp air and feel every measure of distance of its traverse into my lungs. So this is what it is to be alive…
